West Bay Shore is a residential hamlet on Long Island’s South Shore in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, located approximately 45 miles east of Manhattan. Bordering Bay Shore and situated near the Great South Bay, the community is known for its quiet neighborhoods, convenient location along Montauk Highway, and its connection to Sagtikos Manor, one of Long Island’s oldest surviving historic homes. Today, West Bay Shore offers a peaceful suburban setting with easy access to waterfront recreation, shopping, restaurants, parks, and transportation throughout Long Island.

History

The area that is now West Bay Shore developed as part of the larger Bay Shore community during the nineteenth century. Located along one of Long Island’s oldest transportation corridors, Montauk Highway connected the hamlet with neighboring South Shore communities long before the construction of modern parkways. As transportation improved and nearby Bay Shore grew into a commercial center, West Bay Shore evolved into a desirable residential neighborhood while retaining much of its historic character.

One of the community’s most significant landmarks is Sagtikos Manor, a historic estate dating to the late 1600s that is widely regarded as one of the oldest surviving homes on Long Island. The manor, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserves more than three centuries of Long Island history and remains one of Suffolk County’s most important historic sites.

West Bay Shore occupies a convenient location between Bay Shore and Brightwaters, providing residents with quick access to shopping, restaurants, schools, healthcare, and public services. The community is also located only a short distance from Southern State Parkway, the Heckscher State Parkway, and Sunrise Highway, making travel throughout Long Island relatively convenient.

Nearby Great South Bay provides opportunities for boating, fishing, waterfront dining, and seasonal recreation. Residents are also close to the Bay Shore Marina, ferries serving Fire Island, and several public parks that overlook the South Shore waterfront.

Just minutes away, downtown Bay Shore features restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, and seasonal events, while ferries provide access to the beaches and villages of Fire Island.
