East Garden City is a well-known commercial and residential area in central Nassau County on Long Island, located just east of Garden City and closely connected to some of the region’s busiest shopping, business, and transportation corridors. Although the name “East Garden City” is still widely used by residents, businesses, and visitors, much of the area was officially absorbed into the hamlet of Uniondale following a 2010 U.S. Census change. Despite that administrative adjustment, East Garden City continues to maintain its own recognizable identity tied to Roosevelt Field, corporate office centers, hotels, and nearby suburban neighborhoods.

The area is best known as the home of Roosevelt Field Mall, one of the largest and most successful shopping destinations in the northeastern United States. Major roadways including Old Country Road, Stewart Avenue, and the Meadowbrook State Parkway help make East Garden City a central hub for commerce, dining, hospitality, and regional travel within Nassau County. Its proximity to Hofstra University, Nassau Community College, Eisenhower Park, and major Long Island parkways also keeps the area highly active throughout the year.

Location and Regional Setting

East Garden City is situated in the Town of Hempstead in central Nassau County. The area borders Garden City, Uniondale, Westbury, and Carle Place, placing it directly within one of Long Island’s most heavily developed commercial corridors. Its location provides convenient access to both Nassau and western Suffolk County, while also remaining within commuting distance of New York City.

The Long Island Expressway (I-495), Northern State Parkway, Meadowbrook State Parkway, and Wantagh State Parkway are all accessible within a relatively short drive. The nearby Long Island Rail Road stations in Carle Place, Westbury, and Mineola also provide commuter rail access into Manhattan and other parts of Long Island.

Roosevelt Field and Commercial Development

East Garden City is closely associated with Roosevelt Field, one of Long Island’s most historically significant commercial and aviation-related locations. Originally the site of the Roosevelt Field airfield, the property later evolved into a major retail and commercial center. Today, Roosevelt Field Mall serves as the centerpiece of the area and attracts shoppers from across Long Island, New York City, and surrounding states.

The surrounding commercial district includes office buildings, hotels, medical facilities, restaurants, and major national retailers. Companies and professional firms have long favored the area because of its central Nassau County location and strong roadway access. Nearby hospitality properties also support business travelers, tourists, and visitors attending events at Nassau County institutions and entertainment venues.

History of East Garden City

The East Garden City area developed significantly during the post-World War II suburban expansion of Long Island. As Nassau County rapidly transformed from farmland and estates into suburban communities, commercial development intensified around Old Country Road and surrounding transportation routes.

Roosevelt Field itself carries major historical importance. The original airfield was named in honor of Quentin Roosevelt, the son of President Theodore Roosevelt, who was killed during World War I while serving as a military aviator. The airfield became associated with early aviation milestones and helped establish Long Island’s reputation as an important center for aviation innovation during the early twentieth century.

Over time, the aviation facilities gave way to suburban commercial development, eventually resulting in the modern shopping and business district that defines East Garden City today.

Transportation and Accessibility

East Garden City is considered one of the most accessible commercial areas in Nassau County. Major east-west and north-south roadways converge nearby, making the district heavily traveled by commuters, shoppers, and visitors. Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) bus routes operate throughout the area and connect East Garden City with surrounding communities and transportation hubs.

Its central Long Island position also makes it a strategic location for businesses seeking access to both New York City and the broader Long Island suburban market.
