Northwell is most awarded NY tri-state health system for sixth year by U.S. News

NEW HYDE PARK, NY – For the sixth consecutive year, Northwell Health is the most awarded health system in the New York tri-state area*, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-27 Best Hospitals rankings. Eight hospitals ranked among the best in New York state and six – North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in Manhasset, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Huntington HospitalSouth Shore University Hospital (SSUH) in Bay Shore and Glen Cove Hospital – combined to earn 30 adult specialties ranked among the top 50 nationally.

 NSUH and LIJ, respectively, were ranked the fourth and fifth best hospitals in New York by U.S. News, while Lenox Hill was eighth. Other state-ranked Northwell hospitals include: Huntington (11th), SSUH (12th), Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco (16th), Staten Island University Hospital (18th) and Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie (20th).

A CMS 5-star, Magnet-recognized institution which treats more than 90,000 patients each year, North Shore University Hospital is home to the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital, the Katz Women’s HospitalNorthwell Transplant Instituteneurosurgery and is one of the busiest emergency departments in the region. It was nationally ranked by U.S. News in 10 adult specialties for the second straight year: Diabetes and endocrinology (14th), orthopedics (15th), urology (15th), cardiology, heart and vascular (18th), neurology and neurosurgery (24th), obstetrics and gynecology (24th), pulmonology and lung surgery (25th), gastroenterology and GI surgery (30th), geriatrics (35th) and cancer (49th).

 Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a Magnet-recognized hospital which treats more than 80,000 patients each year, is home to the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital, the Katz Women’s Hospital and one of New York City’s top emergency departments. LIJ has seven clinical specialties ranked in the top 50 nationally by U.S. News: Diabetes and endocrinology (12th), orthopedics (17th), urology (21st), obstetrics and gynecology (27th), pulmonology and lung surgery (40th), geriatrics (42nd) and neurology and neurosurgery (44th).  

A fixture on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for more than 160 years, Lenox Hill Hospital is a CMS 5-star, Magnet center of excellence which treats more than 144,000 patients each year. U.S. News ranked Lenox nationally in six specialties for the sixth year in a row: Cardiology, heart and vascular (25th), geriatrics (33rd), pulmonology and lung surgery (30th), neurology and neurosurgery (36th), orthopedics (39th) and urology (42nd). 

Huntington Hospital, generally considered among the state’s best community hospitals, is a CMS 5-star and Magnet designated facility. U.S. News ranked Huntington nationally in four specialties: Diabetes and endocrinology (14th), orthopedics (25th), pulmonology and lung surgery (29th) and geriatrics (33rd).

South Shore University Hospital, a Magnet-recognized trauma center, was ranked by U.S. News in obstetrics and gynecology (20th) and diabetes and endocrinology (49th).

Glen Cove, a CMS 5-star, Magnet-recognized community hospital, is nationally-ranked for the third straight year by U.S. News for rehabilitation at No. 22. It is home to both acute inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient programs.

In addition, U.S. News introduced regional rankings in four specialties: Cancer, cardiology, orthopedics and rehabilitation. NSUH (cancer, cardiology, orthopedics), LIJ (cancer, orthopedics), Lenox (cardiology, orthopedics), Huntington (orthopedics), SSUH (cardiology, orthopedics) and Glen Cove (rehabilitation) each ranked in at least one specialty, along with Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck (rehabilitation) and Staten Island University Hospital (rehabilitation).

New to the list, Huntington Hospital and South Shore University Hospital, each had well-established specialties earn national accolades, while two other hospitals – Northern Dutchess and Staten Island – were recognized regionally. This marks the 37th year of the U.S. News’ Best Hospitals rankings. Its methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. U.S. News evaluated nearly 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 14 specialties to compile its 2026-27 rankings. Only 178 U.S. hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

When U.S. News released its analysis of the nation’s best children’s hospitals in 2025, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park was highest ranked in New York state (tied) and earned top 50 national rankings for exceptional care in 10 pediatric specialties.
