Atlantique is a small residential community on Fire Island in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County. Located between Fair Harbor and Lonelyville, Atlantique is known for its quiet beaches, bayfront marina, and relaxed atmosphere. Like most Fire Island communities, Atlantique is largely free of automobiles, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy a peaceful barrier island environment centered around the Atlantic Ocean, the Great South Bay, and the island’s extensive boardwalk network.

Although primarily a seasonal residential community, Atlantique welcomes visitors arriving by private boat or passenger ferry to nearby Fire Island communities. Its ocean beaches, calm bay waters, and scenic natural surroundings make it an appealing destination for swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, birdwatching, and simply enjoying one of Long Island’s most distinctive coastal landscapes.

History

Atlantique developed during the twentieth century as one of several small residential communities established along Fire Island’s barrier beach. Unlike some neighboring villages with larger commercial districts, Atlantique has remained primarily residential, preserving a quiet atmosphere that reflects the traditional character of Fire Island. Its location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay has long attracted families seeking a peaceful summer retreat.

Today, Atlantique continues to offer a tranquil coastal setting where boardwalks replace streets, beaches remain the primary attraction, and protected dunes help preserve the island’s fragile natural environment. The community’s combination of waterfront recreation and environmental stewardship makes it one of Fire Island’s hidden gems.

Things to Do

Visitors can enjoy wide ocean beaches, boating on the Great South Bay, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, birdwatching, photography, and leisurely walks through the community’s boardwalks and natural dune landscapes. The nearby marina also provides convenient access for recreational boaters exploring Fire Island’s South Shore waters.

Because Atlantique remains a quiet residential neighborhood, it is especially well suited for visitors seeking relaxation, scenic waterfront views, and a slower pace than some of Fire Island’s busier communities.

Getting There

Atlantique is accessible by passenger ferry to nearby Fire Island communities followed by a short walk, or directly by private boat using marina facilities where available. As with most Fire Island communities, automobiles are generally prohibited except for emergency, municipal, and authorized service vehicles.
