Fort Salonga is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located primarily in the Town of Smithtown, with a small portion extending into the Town of Huntington in northwestern Suffolk County, New York. History

Fort Salonga derives its name from a British fort constructed during the American Revolutionary War near the Long Island Sound. Built in 1781, the fort served as part of Britain’s defensive network along the North Shore before being captured by American forces during the successful Raid on Fort Slongo led by Major Benjamin Tallmadge. Although little physical evidence of the fort remains today, its history continues to shape the identity of the community.

For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the area remained largely rural, consisting of farms, estates, and woodlands. Following World War II, residential development gradually expanded while preserving much of Fort Salonga’s wooded landscape and low-density character. Today, the hamlet is recognized as one of the North Shore’s quiet residential communities with strong historical roots.
