The name Cupsogue is believed to originate from a Native American word commonly interpreted as meaning “closed place” or “enclosed bay,” reflecting the area’s geography before shifting ocean inlets reshaped the coastline. Like much of Long Island’s barrier island system, the landscape has been continually influenced by storms, tides, and coastal currents that have altered beaches and waterways for centuries.
The nearby opening of Moriches Inlet during the devastating hurricane of 1931 permanently changed the surrounding shoreline, helping create the coastal environment visitors see today. As automobile travel and outdoor recreation became increasingly popular during the twentieth century, Suffolk County developed the area into a public beach park while preserving much of its natural dune habitat.
