Syosset is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay in north-central Nassau County on Long Island, roughly 30 miles east of Midtown Manhattan. Best known for its highly regarded schools, established residential areas, and convenient access to major roads and the Long Island Rail Road, Syosset is a popular suburban community with easy connections to both New York City and the rest of Long Island.

History & Name

The area was once known as East Woods. The name Syosset came into wider use after the arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the mid-19th century, which helped shape the hamlet’s growth and commercial center. Like many Nassau County communities, Syosset expanded significantly in the decades after World War II, with residential development helping define the modern suburban character seen today.
