History

The area now known as Moriches was originally inhabited by the Indigenous people from whom the community takes its name. European settlers arrived during the seventeenth century, and the area gradually developed into a farming, fishing, and maritime community along the protected waters of Moriches Bay. Throughout the nineteenth century, local residents depended heavily on shellfishing, agriculture, and commerce connected to the South Shore’s waterways.

During the twentieth century, Moriches evolved into a primarily residential community while retaining its strong connection to the bay.
