Gilgo State Park

Gilgo State Park is an undeveloped barrier-beach preserve along Ocean Parkway on the South Shore of Long Island. Positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay, the park is notable for its open shoreline, dunes, fishing access, surfing opportunities, and relatively undeveloped coastal landscape.

Gilgo differs significantly from nearby developed beach parks such as Jones Beach State Park and Robert Moses State Park. There are no large public parking fields, boardwalks, concession areas, or traditional swimming facilities. Access is restricted, and New York State Parks requires an appropriate permit and a four-wheel-drive vehicle to enter designated areas.

An Undeveloped Barrier Beach

Gilgo State Park occupies part of the narrow barrier island separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Great South Bay. Its setting provides views of both bodies of water while preserving a stretch of shoreline that remains far less developed than many other oceanfront destinations along western Long Island.

The park’s character is defined by sandy beach, dunes, beach grass, and open coastal habitat. Because the area is environmentally sensitive, vehicle travel is limited to designated routes and users are prohibited from driving on dunes, wetlands, beach grass, bird nesting areas, and other protected sections of the shoreline.

Fishing and Four-Wheel-Drive Access

Gilgo is particularly well known among surf anglers because New York State Parks permits four-wheel-drive beach access for fishing during designated periods. A regional 4×4 fishing permit is required, along with enrollment in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Recreational Marine Fishing Registry. Current state guidance lists Gilgo for 24-hour fishing access from April 1 through December 31, subject to conditions and park restrictions.

Vehicles using the beach must meet state equipment requirements. These generally include a shovel, tow rope or chain, portable toilet, jack and jack board, full-size spare tire, tire gauge, and appropriate tires that can be aired down for travel on sand. Drivers must remain within designated vehicle-access areas and follow posted speed limits and seasonal restrictions.

Surfing and Windsurfing

Gilgo is also one of the Long Island State Park locations included in the regional four-wheel-drive surfing and windsurfing permit program. State permit guidance identifies Gilgo for year-round four-wheel-drive access for surfing and windsurfing, subject to the terms of the applicable permit and current beach conditions.

Visiting Gilgo State Park

Gilgo State Park is located along Ocean Parkway in the Town of Babylon. It should not be approached like a conventional public beach with ordinary parking and walk-in recreational facilities. Visitors planning to fish, surf, or otherwise enter the designated beach-access areas should first determine which current state permit applies to their activity and confirm that their vehicle and equipment satisfy all requirements.

The park’s restricted-access character is part of what makes it unusual. For permitted users, Gilgo provides access to a comparatively wild section of the barrier island with expansive Atlantic shoreline, bay views, and fewer developed facilities than the major state beaches nearby.
