Syosset is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, situated on Long Island’s North Shore – just about 32 miles east of Manhattan. Covering roughly 5.0 square miles, it had a population of 19,259 as of 2020, reflecting stable growth and a suburban density of approximately 3,871 people per square mile.

History & Name

Originally known as “East Woods” in the 19th century, the name Syosset was adopted by the Long Island Rail Road in 1854 upon extending its line. Growth surged post–World War II with suburban developments like Syosset Gardens.
