Ocean Ridge is a small and primarily residential community on western Fire Island known for its quiet atmosphere, oceanfront setting, and close connection to neighboring Fire Island communities. Located between Saltaire and Seaview, the area is made up largely of seasonal homes, sandy walking paths, and protected coastal surroundings that reflect the laid-back character of Fire Island’s barrier beach communities.

About Ocean Ridge

Situated on the western portion of Fire Island, Ocean Ridge is one of several closely connected communities that stretch along the barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay. Like many Fire Island communities, the area is pedestrian-oriented, with no traditional road network and transportation primarily handled by walking, bicycles, wagons, and occasional service vehicles.

The community consists mainly of private seasonal residences and shares many services and amenities with nearby communities such as Saltaire and Seaview. Visitors are drawn to the area for its quieter environment, uncrowded beaches, and the distinctive coastal lifestyle that defines much of Fire Island.

A Quiet Fire Island Community

Ocean Ridge does not have a large commercial district or major tourist attractions, which is part of its appeal. The area is known more for its peaceful residential setting, dune landscapes, and easy beach access than for nightlife or entertainment. Wooden walkways, sandy paths, and beach vegetation contribute to the relaxed atmosphere found throughout the neighborhood.

Because of its location along Fire Island’s South Shore coastline, residents and visitors enjoy quick access to the Atlantic Ocean beaches as well as nearby bay areas for boating, kayaking, and waterfront recreation. The surrounding communities also provide access to small shops, ferry connections, and seasonal services commonly used by Fire Island residents and vacationers.

Getting to Ocean Ridge

Like most Fire Island communities, Ocean Ridge is generally reached by passenger ferry service departing from the South Shore of Long Island. Travelers commonly access the western Fire Island communities through ferry terminals in Bay Shore and neighboring mainland locations before continuing by foot along the island’s interconnected boardwalks and pathways.

Because automobiles are heavily restricted throughout Fire Island, the experience of visiting Ocean Ridge differs significantly from most Long Island destinations. The absence of traffic, combined with the natural coastal surroundings, is one of the defining characteristics that continues to attract seasonal residents and visitors to the island.
