Napeague, New York

Napeague is a hamlet in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County, on the eastern end of Long Island. Stretching along the narrow land bridge between Amagansett and Montauk, Napeague is known for its expansive Atlantic Ocean beaches, pristine dunes, scenic wetlands, and outstanding opportunities for surfing, fishing, birdwatching, and outdoor recreation. History

The name Napeague is derived from an Algonquian word believed to mean “water place” or “land overflowed by water,” reflecting the area’s geography between the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding bays. For centuries, the region remained sparsely developed because of its shifting dunes, coastal marshes, and exposure to Atlantic storms. Today, much of Napeague retains its natural character through protected lands and limited residential development, preserving the landscape that has long defined this stretch of Long Island’s South Fork.

Napeague is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Napeague Bay to the north. Wide sandy beaches, rolling dunes, freshwater ponds, salt marshes, and maritime forests provide important habitat for migratory birds and coastal wildlife. The area’s open landscapes also offer spectacular sunrises, sunsets, and panoramic views that attract photographers and nature enthusiasts throughout the year.

Parks and Recreation

Napeague is home to several of Long Island’s best-known beaches, including Hither Hills State Park and Napeague State Park. The surrounding coastline is especially popular with anglers pursuing striped bass and bluefish during seasonal migrations.

Transportation

Napeague is primarily accessed via Montauk Highway (Route 27), the only major roadway connecting the South Fork communities. The nearby Long Island Rail Road stations in Amagansett and Montauk provide seasonal and year-round rail service, while Suffolk County Transit buses also serve the corridor between East Hampton and Montauk.
