History

The area now known as Dering Harbor was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples before English settlers established communities on Shelter Island during the seventeenth century. The harbor was named after the Dering family, whose influence on Shelter Island dates back to the early eighteenth century when they acquired much of the island’s landholdings.

As maritime commerce and summer tourism expanded during the nineteenth century, Dering Harbor developed into an important port and gathering place for visitors arriving by steamboat. The village was officially incorporated in 1910 and has since maintained its historic character through careful planning and preservation. Today, Dering Harbor remains one of Long Island’s smallest incorporated villages while preserving its distinctive waterfront setting and architectural heritage.
