From a Small Irish Pub to a Major Concert Venue

Mulcahy’s traces its history to 1965, when it began as a small bar operated by Bill Mulcahy. The venue’s own history describes it as a railroad-side pub that gradually expanded over several decades into a large entertainment complex.

A major turning point came in 1983, when John Murray Jr. purchased the business. Murray had previously serviced Mulcahy’s as one of his jukebox accounts, and under his ownership the establishment began a long period of expansion. By the late 1980s, the jukebox had given way to an early stage, live music happy hours became a regular attraction and part of the rear patio was enclosed to accommodate larger crowds.

The venue grew again in 1994, when Murray acquired the neighboring Andy’s luggage store and incorporated the additional property into Mulcahy’s. The expansion helped transform the business from a neighborhood bar into a much larger sports, nightlife and music venue.

Live Music at Mulcahy’s

Live music eventually became one of Mulcahy’s defining features. The venue’s history lists performers including Joan Jett, The Pogues and Weezer, along with longtime Long Island favorites such as The Nerds and The Satellites. As the building expanded and its production capabilities improved, Mulcahy’s increasingly attracted larger touring acts while continuing to support regional performers.

One particularly significant show came in 2019, when Luke Combs performed at Mulcahy’s alongside Hunter Hayes and Colbie Caillat. According to the venue, tickets for the show sold out in less than four minutes.

Mulcahy’s continues to operate an active concert calendar, with performers covering rock, country, tribute music, alternative acts and other genres. The 2019 Expansion

Mulcahy’s underwent one of its largest transformations in 2019. The outdoor Brickyard Bar area was incorporated into an expanded concert and private-event space. The project added the Joe DelGiorno Gallery Room, including a large wall bar and a custom retractable wall that allows the room to be opened into or separated from the main concert area.

The expanded venue reopened in October 2019 with LOCASH and Shilelagh Law performing at the celebration. The flexible design allows Mulcahy’s to adjust the size and configuration of the building according to the event being held.

Capacity and Layout

Mulcahy’s states that its full venue capacity exceeds 1,600 guests. The building is primarily configured as a bar-style entertainment venue rather than a traditional seated theater. General-admission concerts are therefore usually standing-room events.

Seating availability depends on the event. VIP packages are generally the most reliable way to secure a seat with a stage view, while some events may have limited first-come, first-served seating near the bars.

The venue contains multiple distinct spaces, including the main concert area, Ballroom, Gallery Room and Living Room, giving Mulcahy’s the ability to host both large public events and smaller private functions.

Despite its growth as a concert venue, Mulcahy’s still operates very much as a pub. During the 1990s, the venue promoted itself as one of the first Long Island establishments to show every NFL game at the same time, using multiple satellite feeds. According to Mulcahy’s history, the operation involved staff manually managing rooftop satellite equipment to direct the signals. WFAN also held live events at the venue during this period.

That combination of sports, nightlife and live music helped Mulcahy’s develop an identity that extends beyond that of a conventional concert hall.
