Shinnecock East County Park

Shinnecock East County Park is a Suffolk County park on the barrier beach east of Shinnecock Inlet, in the Town of Southampton. Shinnecock East is not designed as a heavily developed swimming beach with extensive facilities, concessions and large paved parking fields. It is primarily an outer-beach recreation area. Fishing Near Shinnecock Inlet

Fishing is one of the park’s principal attractions. Anglers also use the area for other seasonal saltwater species as conditions permit.

Four-Wheel-Drive Outer-Beach Access

Authorized off-road vehicles may drive on designated portions of the outer beach. Required equipment includes items such as a shovel, jack and jackboard, spare tire, tire gauge, tow line or chain, fire extinguisher, flashlight, first-aid kit and an air compressor or air tank.

Beach-driving access is never guaranteed. Suffolk County Parks may close or restrict sections because of high surf, erosion, soft sand, weather, maintenance, protected wildlife or shorebird nesting. Drivers should check current county notices and the park’s outer-beach map before traveling rather than assuming that a previously open route will remain accessible.

Outer-Beach Camping

Shinnecock East has 103 outer-beach campsites for self-contained camping vehicles. The sites are on the sand and are intended for campers equipped to operate independently in a remote coastal setting. Tent camping is not permitted.

A self-contained camper must have a built-in flush toilet and a built-in holding tank with a minimum capacity of five gallons. A valid Suffolk County Parks Green Key Card is required, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle with the appropriate Outer Beach Recreational Vehicle permit is required for outer-beach camping. Reservations are available through Suffolk County Parks, subject to availability and seasonal operating conditions.

Weekend check-in restrictions may apply during the busiest summer period. Campers should confirm current reservation rules, fire regulations, arrival procedures and any weather-related closures directly with Suffolk County Parks before leaving home.

What to Bring

Visitors should approach Shinnecock East as a self-sufficient outer-beach destination. There are no ordinary campground hookups, and conditions can be windy, exposed and changeable. Rules and Environmental Protection

Shinnecock East is part of a sensitive barrier-island environment. Visitors must stay on authorized routes, observe marked closures and avoid dunes, nesting areas and other protected habitat.
