History

Wildwood State Park was established to preserve a portion of Long Island’s North Shore landscape while providing public access to the Long Island Sound. The park’s rolling woodlands, coastal bluffs, and shoreline reflect the glacial history that shaped much of eastern Long Island thousands of years ago.

Over the decades, the park has expanded its recreational facilities while continuing to protect its natural habitats. Today, it serves both local residents and visitors looking to experience one of Suffolk County’s largest waterfront state parks.

Camping

Hundreds of campsites accommodate tents, trailers, and recreational vehicles, making the park one of the most popular camping destinations on Long Island. Modern amenities, restroom facilities, picnic areas, playgrounds, and seasonal comfort stations help make extended stays convenient for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Reservations are typically recommended during the busy summer season, especially on weekends and holidays.

Beach and Recreation

The park features approximately two miles of shoreline along the Long Island Sound, offering opportunities for swimming, beachcombing, fishing, kayaking, photography, and simply enjoying waterfront views. Visitors can relax on the beach while watching boats travel across the Sound or explore the shoreline’s unique rock formations and coastal scenery.

Picnic areas, open fields, playgrounds, and scenic overlooks provide additional recreation opportunities throughout the park.

Hiking and Nature

Several hiking trails wind through Wildwood State Park’s forests, passing mature oak and pine woodlands, rolling terrain, and elevated bluffs overlooking the Long Island Sound. These trails are popular for walking, birdwatching, wildlife observation, and seasonal photography.

The park’s diverse habitats support numerous bird species, small mammals, reptiles, and native plants, making it a rewarding destination for nature lovers throughout the year.
