Sunset Beach is one of Shelter Island’s most iconic waterfront destinations, known for its sandy beach, upscale hotel, popular restaurant, and spectacular sunset views across Crescent Beach Bay. Located along the northwestern shore of Shelter Island, it attracts both island residents and visitors looking to relax by the water, enjoy outdoor dining, or watch one of the East End’s most beautiful sunsets.

About Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach sits on the western end of Crescent Beach, overlooking the calm waters of Crescent Beach Bay. The area combines a public sandy beach with the well-known Sunset Beach Hotel, restaurant, and outdoor gathering spaces that have become one of Shelter Island’s signature destinations during the warmer months.

Its relaxed waterfront atmosphere makes it equally appealing for families spending the day on the beach, couples enjoying dinner by the water, and boaters arriving from nearby harbors. During summer evenings, visitors gather along the shoreline and outdoor deck to watch the sun set over the bay.

The Beach

The beach features soft sand and generally calm bay waters that are ideal for relaxing, swimming, and enjoying the scenic surroundings. Unlike Long Island’s Atlantic Ocean beaches, the protected location creates smaller waves and a peaceful shoreline. The beach also offers excellent views across the bay toward the wooded coastline.

Dining and Hotel

The Sunset Beach Hotel and Restaurant has become one of Shelter Island’s best-known destinations, offering waterfront dining, overnight accommodations, and outdoor seating overlooking the beach. Visitors can enjoy lunch, dinner, cocktails, or simply relax while taking in panoramic water views. Reservations are often recommended during the busy summer season.

Sunsets

As its name suggests, Sunset Beach is famous for its evening views. Facing west across Crescent Beach Bay, the shoreline provides an excellent vantage point as the sun gradually sets over the water. The changing colors reflected across the bay make it one of the most photographed locations on Shelter Island and a favorite gathering place during summer evenings.
