WESTBURY, N.Y. — A 27-year-old man from New Cassel has been arrested after police say he stabbed a taxi driver during a late-night altercation in Westbury.
According to detectives, Sergio Ariel Guevara entered a taxi on Maple Avenue around 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, where a dispute broke out with the 31-year-old driver. During the encounter, Guevara allegedly displayed a knife and stabbed the driver in the arm before fleeing the vehicle.
The injured driver managed to drive a short distance away and call for help. Responding officers found him bleeding heavily from a deep laceration to his left arm. Police quickly applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding before transporting the victim to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
A tourniquet is a device, typically a strip of cloth or rubber, wrapped tightly around a limb to stop or slow the flow of blood. It is used in emergencies to control severe bleeding from an extremity when other methods like direct pressure have failed. Tourniquets are also used in medical procedures like surgeries or when drawing blood.
As officers continued their investigation and interviewed witnesses at the scene, Guevara reportedly returned to the area and was identified by a witness. He was taken into custody without further incident, and a knife believed to have been used in the assault was recovered.
Police say Guevara was also taken to a local hospital for assessment before being processed at the precinct.
He is charged with Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. Guevara was scheduled for arraignment on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at First District Court, located at 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
