NEW CASSEL, NY – On Wednesday, January 18, 2024, in Nassau County, a New Cassel man was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon. The Nassau County Police Third Squad received a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired in the air on Brook Street near Broadway.

As officers arrived at the scene, members of the Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team (CIRRT) spotted a man who matched the description provided in the 911 call.

The suspect, identified as Kevin Vanegas, 27, residing on Grand Street, attempted to flee but was apprehended when he sought refuge in the rear of 700 Broadway. Following the investigation, law enforcement recovered three shell casings on Brook Street, along with a black P80 handgun.

As a result, Vanegas now faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal use of a firearm in the second degree, and criminal possession of a firearm. Vanegas is scheduled to be arraigned at the First District Court, located at 99 Main Street, Hempstead, on Friday, January 19, 2024.
