Hither Hills State Park

Located on the scenic eastern end of Long Island in Montauk, Hither Hills State Park is one of the South Fork’s signature outdoor destinations, known for its broad Atlantic beach, rolling dunes, maritime woods, and highly sought-after oceanfront campground. Spanning well over 1,700 acres, the park combines classic shoreline recreation with protected natural landscapes on the edge of the East End.

Hither Hills is especially well known for its seasonal campground, where many campsites sit unusually close to the ocean compared with most parks in New York. It remains a favorite for families, RV travelers, and tent campers looking for a classic Montauk stay with easy beach access. Comfort stations, showers, picnic areas, and other visitor services are typically available during the main camping season, though amenities and operating dates can vary.

Beyond camping, the park is popular for swimming, surf fishing, hiking, biking, birdwatching, and nature photography. Trails pass through maritime forest and freshwater wetland habitats and include access to the park’s best-known natural feature, the Walking Dunes near Napeague Harbor. The shifting sands and surrounding scenery make Hither Hills rewarding well beyond summer, especially in spring and fall.

Because this is one of Long Island’s most in-demand state park campgrounds, reservations often fill far in advance for peak dates. Beach conditions, lifeguard coverage, fishing rules, camping availability, and seasonal services may change, so it is wise to check current park updates before making the trip.
