Nassau Health Care Corporation, commonly abbreviated as NHCC and publicly known as the NuHealth System, is a New York State public-benefit corporation that operates major healthcare facilities in Nassau County. Its principal institutions are Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility in Uniondale.

NHCC serves as Nassau County’s principal public safety-net healthcare system. It provides hospital care, trauma and emergency services, outpatient treatment, behavioral healthcare, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, medical education, and other essential services for patients throughout central and western Long Island. Its facilities treat patients regardless of their ability to pay and care for substantial numbers of Medicaid, Medicare, uninsured, and medically vulnerable residents.

Nassau Health Care Corporation and NuHealth

Nassau Health Care Corporation is the organization’s legal name, while NuHealth is the public-facing name used for the healthcare system and its coordinated services. NHCC was established in 1999 to assume responsibility for healthcare facilities formerly operated directly by Nassau County. The NuHealth name was introduced in 2008 as the organization expanded its emphasis on coordinated hospital, outpatient, long-term, and community-based care.

The distinction is important because Nassau University Medical Center is only one part of the organization. NUMC is the system’s flagship hospital and administrative center, while NHCC is the public corporation responsible for the larger system.

Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities

Nassau Health Care Corporation oversees a healthcare system with more than 1,100 licensed hospital and skilled-nursing beds. Its principal facilities and programs include:

  • Nassau University Medical Center: A 530-bed tertiary-care teaching hospital and Level I Trauma Center located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.
  • A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility: A 589-bed public skilled-nursing and rehabilitation facility located at 875 Jerusalem Avenue in Uniondale.
  • Faculty Practice Plan: Physician practices and specialty medical services associated with Nassau University Medical Center.
  • Family Health Centers: Community-based primary and preventive healthcare services provided through centers co-operated with Harmony Healthcare Long Island.
  • Outpatient Services: Specialty clinics, diagnostic services, rehabilitation programs, behavioral healthcare, and disease-management services serving patients across Nassau County.

Nassau University Medical Center

Nassau University Medical Center is the heart of the NuHealth System and one of the most important public hospitals on Long Island. The hospital traces its history to Meadowbrook Hospital, which opened in 1935. It later became Nassau County Medical Center before receiving its present name in 2001.

NUMC provides emergency medicine, trauma care, surgical services, behavioral healthcare, substance-use treatment, primary care, specialty medicine, and outpatient services. Its notable programs include the Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center, a designated stroke center, psychiatric and chemical-dependency services, and extensive medical imaging and laboratory facilities.

The hospital’s 19-story main tower is one of the most recognizable buildings in central Nassau County. As a Level I Trauma Center, NUMC is equipped to treat severe and life-threatening injuries while supporting emergency medical response throughout the surrounding region.

A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility

The A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility is a public skilled-nursing institution in Uniondale. Founded in 1961, the facility provides long-term nursing care, rehabilitation, medical supervision, and supportive services for residents with complex healthcare needs.

With a licensed capacity of 589 beds, A. Holly Patterson is one of the largest skilled-nursing facilities on Long Island. Its role extends beyond traditional nursing-home care by serving patients who may require substantial medical assistance, rehabilitation, ventilator support, or other specialized long-term services.

Public Safety-Net Role

NHCC’s importance to Nassau County is greater than its size alone suggests. Nassau University Medical Center treats large numbers of patients covered by Medicaid and Medicare, as well as uninsured patients and people who may have difficulty obtaining care elsewhere. The system also maintains extensive behavioral-health, substance-use, emergency, trauma, and outpatient programs.

This safety-net mission distinguishes NHCC from Long Island’s larger private and nonprofit hospital networks. Although it does not operate the number of hospitals maintained by systems such as Northwell Health, Catholic Health, or NYU Langone Health, NHCC remains one of the region’s most consequential public healthcare organizations.

Medical Education and Training

Nassau University Medical Center is a teaching hospital with a longstanding role in educating physicians and other healthcare professionals. Its medical education programs include residency and fellowship training, clinical instruction, continuing medical education, and partnerships with medical schools and healthcare institutions in the New York metropolitan region.

The system’s broad patient population and extensive emergency, trauma, behavioral-health, and specialty services provide trainees with experience across numerous medical disciplines. This educational mission helps support the future healthcare workforce while contributing to the level of care available within the system.

Organizational and Financial Scale

With a 530-bed hospital, a 589-bed skilled-nursing facility, physician practices, and outpatient services, NHCC ranks among Long Island’s largest public healthcare institutions. Its adopted 2026 operating budget projected approximately $586.5 million in operating revenue and $721.5 million in operating expenses, including nearly $312 million in salaries.

Those figures illustrate both the size of the organization and the financial challenges associated with operating a public safety-net system. NHCC has historically depended on a combination of patient-service revenue, government assistance, intergovernmental payments, and public funding to maintain essential services for Nassau County residents.
