JAMAICA, NY – With winter approaching, NorthLine Garage Doors is encouraging Long Island homeowners to inspect their garage doors for worn hardware, damaged weather seals, and problems with safety features before colder weather arrives.

The Jamaica, Queens-based company, which advertises residential garage door repair and installation in Nassau and Suffolk counties and parts of New York City, issued the seasonal reminder in a statement submitted to Long Island Guide. Owner Meir Mazal said homeowners should pay attention to changes in how their doors move and to visible signs of deterioration.

“Most winter garage door emergencies start as small, visible problems in the fall — a spring that’s wearing out, a seal that’s cracked, a backup battery that’s dead,” Mazal said in the statement.

Regular inspections are also recommended by the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association International, an industry trade association. Its guidance calls for monthly safety checks and maintenance, along with an annual visit from a trained door systems technician. Homeowners should consult the instructions for their particular door and opener before performing checks.

NorthLine’s recommendations include visually inspecting cables and springs, checking weather seals for cracks or gaps, and testing the opener’s safety features according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For homes near Long Island’s shoreline, the company also identifies corrosion on metal components as an issue to watch.

Homeowners should distinguish between the opener’s photoelectric sensors and its contact reversal system. The sensors detect an interrupted beam near the bottom of the opening, while the contact reversal system responds when the closing door encounters an obstruction. Chamberlain Group’s maintenance guidance includes checks of both systems and advises contacting a garage door professional if the door does not reverse properly.

For openers equipped with a backup battery, homeowners should test it as directed in the owner’s manual. A battery backup is intended to allow the opener to operate during an electrical outage; it does not correct a mechanical problem with the door.

Springs, cables, and related hardware require particular caution. Chamberlain Group warns that these components are under extreme tension and should not be loosened, moved, or adjusted by homeowners. A door that sticks, moves unevenly, or appears damaged should be taken out of use until a professional evaluates it.

NorthLine says its residential services include repairs to springs, cables, tracks, and openers, as well as replacement door installation. The company advertises service in Nassau County, Suffolk County, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island, with availability dependent on location and scheduling.
