John W. Engeman Theater

John W. Engeman Theater is a year-round professional theater located on Main Street in the Northport, New York. Known for presenting fully staged musicals and plays with professional performers, the theater brings Broadway-style productions to an intimate setting in the heart of one of Long Island’s historic waterfront villages.

The theater occupies a building with a performing arts history stretching back to the early 1930s. Once Northport’s neighborhood movie theater, the property was transformed into a professional live theater and reopened as the John W. Engeman Theater in 2007. Today, it presents a regular Main Stage season along with special performances and events.

History of the John W. Engeman Theater

Northport’s theatrical history at this end of Main Street predates the current building. The village’s first movie house opened nearby at 256 Main Street in 1912 and was used not only for silent films and vaudeville, but also for school ceremonies, political rallies, children’s recitals and even basketball games. That building was destroyed by a fire in April 1932.

A replacement theater was constructed on adjoining property at 248-250 Main Street. The new Northport Theater opened on November 23, 1932, with 754 seats and was promoted as a modern, fireproof movie house. Its opening attraction was the film Sherlock Holmes, starring Clive Brook and Ernest Torrence.

The Northport Theater underwent a major renovation in 1950 that included a remodeled lobby, new seating, updated stage curtains and wall coverings, air conditioning and the stainless steel marquee that became a recognizable part of the building’s appearance. The theater continued showing movies for decades as ownership and the motion picture business changed.

United Artists eventually operated the theater as a second-run movie house, but it closed in 1996. An attempted reopening followed, and the Northport Theater returned to operation in 1999, although the business was unable to establish lasting commercial success.

Transformation Into a Professional Theater

On June 30, 2006, Huntington resident and entrepreneur Kevin O’Neill and his wife, Patti, purchased the Northport Theater. Kevin O’Neill subsequently partnered with theater producer Richard Dolce, who had been running the Broadhollow Theatre Company, to convert the former movie house into a year-round professional live theater.

The theater was named in memory of Patti O’Neill’s brother, Chief Warrant Officer Four John William Engeman, who was killed while serving in Iraq on May 14, 2006. Following an extensive renovation, the John W. Engeman Theater opened its doors in 2007.

The conversion gave the historic building a new role while preserving its longstanding connection to entertainment in downtown Northport. The theater is led by Executive Producer Richard Dolce and Managing Director Kevin O’Neill and has developed into one of Long Island’s prominent professional theatrical venues.

Professional Theater and Productions

The John W. Engeman Theater operates as a professional Equity theater and draws performers from the Broadway talent pool. Its Main Stage seasons feature a mixture of major musicals, plays, comedies and dramas, with productions created specifically for the Northport stage rather than simply serving as a stop for touring productions.

Productions incorporate professional direction, choreography, scenic and costume design, lighting, sound and live musical accompaniment when required. The theater’s comparatively intimate scale places audiences considerably closer to the stage than they would typically be in a large performing arts center.

In addition to its regular theatrical season, the Engeman has hosted special performances, benefits, fundraisers and private events. The theater reached its 20th season with its 2026-2027 schedule, reflecting two decades of professional live theater in Northport.

Inside the Theater

The auditorium features stadium-style seating along with professional lighting and sound systems. The venue also includes a Lobby Lounge Bar, which opens to ticket holders before performances and serves craft beer, wine, cocktails and nonalcoholic beverages.

The theater provides integrated wheelchair and companion seating on a first-come, first-served basis. An accessible restroom is located on the main floor, and wireless assisted-listening headsets are available at performances at no additional charge.

The John W. Engeman Theater is located at 250 Main Street in Northport, placing it within the village’s downtown business district and a short distance from Northport Harbor. Restaurants, shops and other businesses line Main Street around the theater, allowing visitors to combine a performance with dining or time along the waterfront.

Parking is available in municipal parking areas throughout Northport Village. The theater also offers complimentary valet parking for performances, subject to availability, and recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before showtime.
