History of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse

Embury also designed alterations to the building during the early 1960s.

On March 23, 1974, the building was dedicated in honor of John Cranford Adams, Hofstra University’s second president. Adams served as president from 1944 to 1964 and was a noted Shakespearean scholar who played an important role in developing Hofstra’s performing arts traditions. He was the principal founder of the university’s Shakespeare Festival and designed a model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre based on his scholarly research.

Over the decades, the Playhouse has hosted far more than theatrical productions. Hofstra records document concerts, lectures, readings and appearances by prominent public figures, artists and scholars. The building celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, marking half a century as one of the university’s principal gathering and performance spaces.
