The DNA Learning Center
The DNA Learning Center in Cold Spring Harbor is a hands-on science education center operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Located in a historic brick schoolhouse on Main Street, the center introduces students, families and other visitors to genetics, molecular biology, human inheritance and modern laboratory science.
Established in 1988, the DNA Learning Center was the first science center in the world devoted entirely to public genetics education. Its Cold Spring Harbor location, formally known as the Dolan DNA Learning Center, remains the home base for a broader network of educational facilities and programs developed by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
Hands-On Genetics Education
The center is designed primarily as an active learning facility rather than a traditional science museum. Students work with laboratory equipment, conduct experiments and explore subjects such as DNA extraction, inheritance, biotechnology, forensic science, genomics and bioinformatics.
Programs are available for elementary, middle school and high school students, with many activities organized according to age or grade level. Our Human Inheritance Exhibit
The Dolan DNA Learning Center includes the Our Human Inheritance exhibit, which explores human evolution, genetics and the biological connections shared by people around the world. One of its most recognizable features is a detailed reconstruction of Ötzi the Iceman, a naturally preserved individual who lived more than 5,000 years ago.
The exhibit uses models, displays and interactive material to examine what DNA can reveal about ancestry, human variation and the distant past. Weekday visitors may ordinarily view the exhibit without charge during posted public hours, although school groups, tours and educational programs may limit access at certain times. The center recommends calling ahead before making a special trip.
Field Trips and School Programs
School field trips are a major part of the DNA Learning Center’s mission. Programs range from introductory activities involving cells, DNA models and inheritance to more advanced exercises in DNA fingerprinting, genetic analysis and molecular biology.
Students may use equipment and techniques commonly associated with working research laboratories, including micropipettes, electrophoresis equipment and computer-based genetic analysis. Programs must generally be scheduled in advance, and availability, pricing and age requirements vary by activity.
Saturday DNA and Family Programs
The center also offers Saturday DNA sessions and occasional public events for children, teenagers and families. These scheduled programs allow participants to complete hands-on experiments and explore subjects such as microbiology, genetics, biotechnology and DNA analysis.
Saturday DNA sessions generally require advance reservations, and walk-in participation may not be available. Some programs require an adult chaperone to register and participate alongside younger students. Topics, age ranges, dates and fees change throughout the year.
Science Camps and Educator Training
Seasonal science camps provide students with more intensive exposure to genetics and laboratory biology. Campers entering middle school or high school can perform experiments using professional-style laboratory and computer equipment while studying topics that may go beyond the material normally covered in their grade level.
The DNA Learning Center also conducts training programs for teachers and other educators. These workshops help participants incorporate genetics, genomics, DNA barcoding, sequencing and related laboratory techniques into classroom instruction.
Historic Main Street Location
The Dolan DNA Learning Center occupies a Georgian-style building at 334 Main Street in the center of Cold Spring Harbor. A rural school was established at the site during the 1800s, and the historic building now contains modern teaching laboratories and museum space.
The center is located along Route 25A near the shops and attractions of downtown Cold Spring Harbor, just east of the main Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory campus. It is also close to the Whaling Museum and Education Center, making it possible to visit both educational attractions during a trip to the hamlet.
Visiting the DNA Learning Center
The museum exhibit is generally open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with access on select Saturdays when programs are scheduled. Public access can be affected by field trips, guided tours and other activities, especially around midday, so visitors should verify current hours before arriving
Laboratory programs, tours, camps and special events usually require advance registration. The center’s Main Street location should not be confused with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s main entrance on Bungtown Road. Official directions specifically instruct visitors traveling to the Dolan DNA Learning Center to continue into downtown Cold Spring Harbor rather than entering the laboratory campus.
