NORTH MERRICK, N.Y. – A North Merrick man is facing multiple charges after allegedly brandishing a knife at police officers who responded to a domestic disturbance on Sunday evening.

According to Nassau County police, officers were dispatched to a residence on Roberta Lane around 5:15 p.m. on June 22, 2025, following a 911 call reporting a dispute. Upon arrival, officers encountered 24-year-old Malik Maitland, who had reportedly been engaged in a verbal argument with a 52-year-old female inside the home. A second resident, a male, placed the emergency call as the situation escalated.

As officers attempted to take Maitland into custody, authorities say he suddenly displayed a knife, prompting a swift response. Officers deployed a Taser to subdue him and safely brought him into custody without further injury. Maitland was then transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

He has been charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, Menacing a Police Officer, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, and Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree.

Maitland was scheduled for arraignment on Monday, June 23, 2025, at First District Court in Hempstead.

This incident prompted a public safety alert from the Nassau County Police Department due to the presence of a weapon and the threat posed to officers during the arrest.
