History

Heckscher State Park was originally part of the sprawling estates of wealthy Long Island families in the early 20th century. It was donated to the state in 1924 by philanthropist August Heckscher, who envisioned the land as a public recreational resource for New Yorkers. Today, it remains one of the most accessible and popular parks in Suffolk County.
