Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve is a sprawling 1,500-acre park located in Lloyd Harbor, Huntington, on the North Shore of Long Island. Set on a scenic peninsula extending into Long Island Sound, the park offers breathtaking water views, rolling meadows, woodlands, salt marshes, and historic estate grounds. It is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and nature lovers, offering year-round activities in a tranquil, preserved landscape.

History

The property was originally the estate of Marshall Field III, heir to the Marshall Field department store fortune. Built in 1921, the estate included a Georgian-style mansion, polo fields, stables, gardens, and working farms. The name “Caumsett” is derived from a Native American term meaning “place by a sharp rock.”

In 1961, the State of New York acquired the land, designating it as a historic park and later as a preserve to protect its diverse ecosystems. Many of the original estate buildings still stand, offering a glimpse into Long Island’s Gold Coast era.
