Marie Byron, 65, of Jamaica, is shown in a booking photo released by Nassau County Police. Detectives say she was arrested after investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing her handling a 96-year-old patient’s injured leg in a manner that caused significant pain. She is charged with endangering the welfare of an elderly and physically disabled person following the incident in a Lawrence home.

LAWRENCE, NY – The Nassau County Police Department’s Fourth Squad has arrested a Jamaica woman following an investigation into injuries suffered by a 96-year-old woman under her care in Lawrence.

According to detectives, the victim’s overnight home health aide arrived at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, to relieve the daytime aide. Upon entering the residence, she noticed a fresh laceration on the elderly woman that had not been present the night before. The victim also complained of severe leg pain, prompting the aide to immediately contact the victim’s legal guardian and call 911.

The woman was transported by officers to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined she had sustained a broken femur.

Detectives say the victim’s legal guardian later reviewed interior home surveillance footage and observed the woman falling earlier in the day. The video then allegedly showed the daytime aide, identified as Marie Byron, 65, grabbing the victim’s leg and shaking it aggressively, causing the elderly woman significant pain. Investigators noted that Byron did not call 911 or seek any medical assistance following the incident.

After completing their investigation, police arrested Byron, of 166th Place in Jamaica, without incident.

Byron is charged with Endangering the Welfare of an Elderly, Incompetent, or Physically Disabled Person in the First Degree, as well as Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person in the Second Degree. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, December 8, 2025, at First District Court in Hempstead.
