Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue, now officially known as NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk, has been a cornerstone of medical care for residents across central and eastern Suffolk County for nearly seven decades. Though many locals still refer to it by its longtime community name, the hospital today operates as a modern facility within the nationally ranked NYU Langone Health network.

Originally founded in 1956 as Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, the facility underwent major expansions and service improvements over the years. In 2018, it rebranded as Long Island Community Hospital (LICH) to better reflect its role serving the wider Long Island community. Then, in 2022, the hospital entered an affiliation with NYU Langone Health, culminating in a full merger and official renaming in March 2025 to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk.

The hospital today operates a 306-bed acute-care facility offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services, including emergency care, cardiac and vascular treatment, cancer care, orthopedics, bariatric surgery, gastroenterology, and women’s health. Its Knapp Cardiac Care Center provides advanced cardiac diagnostics, interventional cardiology, and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Emergency services include a Provisional Level II Trauma Center, a Primary Stroke Center certified by the New York State Department of Health, and 24-hour emergency coverage by board-certified physicians. Diagnostic imaging has also been upgraded with state-of-the-art MRI, CT, ultrasound, and interventional radiology equipment.

As part of its integration into the NYU Langone system, the Patchogue hospital is now undergoing a $650 million modernization plan. This investment includes a new patient tower with 144 all-private rooms, redesigned surgical suites, expanded emergency and cardiac units, and enhanced outpatient facilities. The multi-year project aims to bring the hospital’s infrastructure and patient experience in line with NYU Langone’s Manhattan and Long Island campuses.

For residents of the South Shore and central Suffolk County, the hospital’s transition represents a major leap forward in access to world-class care right in Patchogue. Patients now benefit from NYU Langone’s electronic health record system, telehealth options, and access to top specialists without needing to travel into New York City.

The partnership also preserves the community-based roots of the hospital, ensuring that local patients continue receiving personalized, neighborhood-centered care while enjoying the benefits of advanced medicine, research, and safety standards backed by a major academic medical center.

Although the hospital has changed names over time, its identity as “Long Island Community Hospital” remains deeply embedded in local culture. Many Suffolk residents still use the former name when referring to their local hospital, a testament to its longstanding role in the community and its continued presence in local memory.
