BRENTWOOD, NY – Members of the court recently visited the Suffolk County Police Academy on
March 19th to give a legal lecture to cadets of its 194th Recruit Class, offering valuable insight into
court procedures and the many specialized court parts that are available in Suffolk County. Acting
Supreme Court Justice Hon. John Iliou and Edward Gialella, Program Director for Suffolk County
Problem-Solving Courts, together presented a comprehensive overview of the post-arrest justice system,
helping to strengthen their understanding of how law enforcement and the courts work together.

Judge Iliou and Mr. Gialella discussed with the cadets Suffolk County’s diverse array of problemsolving
courts, with particular emphasis on Suffolk’s Drug Court and the Integrated Domestic Violence
Court, over which Judge Iliou presides. Their discussion underscored how these specialized courts
support law enforcement objectives by reducing recidivism, decreasing community violence, and
ensuring that orders of protection are clear, meaningful, and enforceable.

This marks the third consecutive year that Judge Iliou and Mr. Gialella have presented to Police
Academy cadets, reflecting an ongoing commitment to collaboration and education between the courts
and law enforcement.

“It is critically important that those entering law enforcement understand not only the arrest process, but what follows in the courtroom,” said Judge Iliou after the lecture. “Our goal is to provide these future officers with a clearer picture of how the justice system functions as a whole, and how problem-solving courts can serve as effective tools in promoting long-term public safety.”

component of their training as they prepare to serve and protect the residents of Suffolk County.
