HEMPSTEAD, NY – Nassau County police arrested a Lakeview man following an armed robbery at a Hempstead convenience store early Tuesday morning, according to a department press release.

The robbery occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at a 7-Eleven located at 531 Fulton Avenue, police said. Detectives reported that the suspect entered the store and approached a 20-year-old male employee, displayed a handgun, and demanded money.

According to police, the employee complied out of fear for his life and handed over approximately $800 in U.S. currency. The suspect then fled the scene on foot. No injuries were reported.

Following what police described as an extensive investigation, detectives from the Third Squad, working in conjunction with the Hempstead Investigations Unit, located the suspect and placed him under arrest without incident.

Police identified the defendant as Dion Mitchell, 57, of Coventry Road South, Lakeview, a residential hamlet in the Town of Hempstead near the Queens border.

Mitchell has been charged with Robbery in the First Degree and Menacing in the Second Degree, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

He was scheduled to be arraigned today, Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at First District Court, located at 99 Main Street in Hempstead, police said.
