RIVERHEAD, NY – Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Silvia Alvarez DeReyes, 46, a citizen of El Salvador, has been indicted for allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash that killed 45-year-old Ever Eli Damian Mazat of Riverside earlier this month. Riverside is a small residential hamlet just south of downtown Riverhead.
According to investigators, the crash occurred on October 5, 2025, at approximately 7:19 p.m., when Alvarez DeReyes was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla northbound on Flanders Road. As her vehicle passed through a marked crosswalk, it allegedly struck Mazat, who was crossing the street. Witnesses reported that the car came to a brief stop before leaving the area without rendering aid or contacting authorities.
Emergency responders pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
Prosecutors said Alvarez DeReyes allegedly drove to a friend’s home in Mastic following the crash, where she left her vehicle. Approximately two hours later, she returned to the crash site accompanied by friends and was subsequently taken into custody by police. The Toyota Corolla was later recovered and secured as evidence.
Alvarez DeReyes was produced in Suffolk County Court on October 28, 2025, pursuant to a writ from U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which had previously detained her. She was arraigned before Acting Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski on charges of Leaving the Scene of an Incident Without Reporting (Class D felony) and Operating a Motor Vehicle Outside the Class of License (Traffic Infraction).
Justice Pilewski ordered her remanded pending trial. She is scheduled to appear again in court on November 25, 2025, and faces 2⅓ to 7 years in prison if convicted of the top charge.
Following any sentence imposed by the court, ICE has lodged a detainer to take custody of Alvarez DeReyes for removal proceedings. She is represented by the Suffolk County Legal Aid Society.
