
EAST MEADOW, NY – According to detectives, a nurse at Nassau University Medical Center was injured early Tuesday morning after being attacked by a man who was found damaging ceiling tiles in a hospital bathroom, according to Nassau County Police.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the hospital located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike. Police say the 53-year-old nurse approached the bathroom to check on a man who had been inside for an extended period. Upon opening the door, she reportedly observed the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Raul Guzman Campos of Hempstead, damaging the ceiling with a sharp object.
According to detectives, Campos then charged at the nurse and struck her in the back with the sharp object, causing her to fall and sustain a head injury. Officers from the Second Precinct, who were present in the hospital on an unrelated matter, responded immediately and took the suspect into custody without further incident.
The nurse suffered a laceration to her back and head trauma. She was treated for her injuries at the hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Following the arrest, officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing a brown powdery substance believed to be heroin in the suspect’s wallet.
Raul Guzman Campos is facing multiple charges, including Assault in the Second Degree, Menacing in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree. Police said he will be arraigned when medically practical.
As of now, authorities haven’t released a motive. The suspect’s reason for cutting into the ceiling remains unclear. It’s also not confirmed whether the suspect was a patient, visitor, or had unauthorized access to the facility. The investigation is ongoing.
