NEW HYDE PARK, NY – A 15-year-old boy was killed Saturday evening after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric bicycle in North New Hyde Park. The driver of the vehicle was arrested shortly after the incident, according to Nassau County police.

The fatal crash occurred around 8:12 p.m. on July 12 at the intersection of Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue. Police say the teen was traveling eastbound on Bryant Avenue when he was struck by a 2015 Lexus that was heading southbound on Lakeville Road.

The teen sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. His identity has not been released, pending notification of family members.

The driver, identified as Ruyan Ali, 28, of New Hyde Park Road, fled the scene but was located and arrested nearby without further incident, according to the Homicide Squad.

Ali is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 2nd and 3rd Degree
  • Additional unspecified violations of the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law

He was arraigned on Sunday, July 13, at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.

Leaving the scene of a fatal accident is a felony under New York State law, and the presence of aggravated unlicensed operation charges indicates the suspect was driving with a suspended or revoked license at the time of the incident. Additional charges could be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

Local authorities have not released further information about the cause of the crash, whether drugs or alcohol were suspected, or how Ali’s unlicensed status was determined.

The crash site sits near a residential section of North New Hyde Park, at the border of Nassau County and Queens. The intersection of Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue is known for steady traffic but lacks the pedestrian infrastructure seen in larger neighboring corridors.
