SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. – A Suffolk County man has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison for shooting a family member during an early morning altercation outside a Mount Sinai billiards bar in May 2024.

Jonathan Redar, 33, of Miller Place, was convicted of Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree following a jury trial in May 2025. He was sentenced on June 30, 2025, to two decades behind bars, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on May 7, 2024, in the parking lot of a bar in Mount Sinai. An argument between Redar and his relative escalated to violence when Redar pulled out a firearm and fired a single shot at the victim. The bullet struck the individual’s left forearm and abdominal area, causing severe internal injuries. Several bystanders were nearby at the time of the shooting.

After the shooting, Redar fled the scene. The victim was rushed to Mather Hospital before being transferred to the trauma unit at Stony Brook Hospital for emergency surgery. Medical staff treated him for shattered bones, internal damage, and removed a bullet fragment from his body.

A week after the incident, Suffolk County Police located Redar during a surveillance operation and arrested him outside a Walmart in Yaphank on May 15, 2024.

Redar’s criminal history includes multiple prior felony convictions, including Attempted Assault in 2012 and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in 2016. His status as a prior felony offender played a role in the severity of his sentencing.

The case was tried before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz. Redar was represented by attorney David Besso. The prosecution was handled by Assistant District Attorneys Sean E. Buckley and Jeremy Waite of the Major Crime Bureau. The investigation involved members of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Sixth Squad, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, and internal research analysts.

The District Attorney’s Office emphasized that the sentence sends a message about the county’s firm stance on gun violence and criminal recidivism.
