VALLEY STREAM, NY – A 20-year-old Freeport man was arrested Thursday following two separate theft attempts at Green Acres Mall that escalated into multiple assaults, including an altercation with law enforcement.

According to Nassau County police, Aragon Burgess, of Independence Avenue in Freeport, was first confronted around 2:40 p.m. on June 26 after allegedly stealing merchandise from Macy’s Men’s Department Store at 1095 Green Acres Mall. After passing all points of sale without paying, Burgess was approached by a store loss prevention officer. Police say Burgess responded by threatening to stab the employee before fleeing.

Shortly after, he was spotted again – this time inside Macy’s Women’s Department at 1000 Green Acres Mall. There, Burgess allegedly concealed additional items in a backpack and again left the store without making any attempt to pay. While attempting to flee, he reportedly shoved a 63-year-old male bystander to the ground, causing injury. A police officer was also injured during the attempt to apprehend him.

Burgess was ultimately taken into custody and transported to the Fifth Precinct for processing. While in custody, police say he became aggressive and spit on two officers during booking.

He is now facing multiple charges, including: Robbery in the 2nd Degree, Robbery in the 3rd Degree, Two counts of Assault in the 2nd Degree, Harassment in the 2nd Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest.

The injured victims, including the officer and the 63-year-old civilian, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Burgess was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Friday, June 27, 2025.
