Google is quietly expands its AI-assisted Search capabilities with the Search Generative Experience (SGE), offering a glimpse into what the future of Google’s search function could look like. The SGE appears as a colorful text pop-up below the search bar and provides a summary of Google’s results, along with simplified answers. This feature aims to assist users with more complex queries or questions that require information from multiple web pages.

Previously available only to select users, Google has now extended the SGE to non-test users. However, it will only appear for a subset of queries and a small percentage of search traffic in the U.S., according to Search Engine Land. The company is testing the AI’s responses and gathering feedback from users who have not opted into the SGE. This crowdsourcing effort aims to determine the usefulness of the technology for users who may not be as enthusiastic about AI.

Google’s expansion of AI-powered offerings and its commitment to removing low-quality spam content from search results reflect the company’s ongoing efforts to revamp its search function. The AI-powered Search, introduced in May 2023, provides users with a snapshot of key information and links to explore further. However, some users have found the introduction of AI results in this way to be unexpected and potentially disruptive.

With the SGE, Google is exploring new ways to enhance the search experience and provide more comprehensive and helpful information to users. By gathering feedback from a wider audience, the company aims to improve its AI-assisted capabilities and tailor them to meet the needs of all users.
