May 15, 2015 — ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A state board established to examine raising the minimum wage for workers in fast-food restaurants plans hearings across the state in June.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week directed state labor authorities to recommend what it should be.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, who chairs the board, has tentatively set public hearings June 5 in Buffalo and in the following three weeks in New York City, Long Island and Albany.

Cuomo says the wage is supposed to let full-time workers “earn a decent living” but for too many fast-food workers that’s not true.

Under New York law, a wage board can suggest changes to the minimum wage in a specific industry.

The state’s current minimum of $8.75 an hour for most workers increases to $9 at the end of the year.
