The commission will focus on similar issues in an effort to address traffic safety issues throughout Suffolk County. “I want to thank Legislator Anker for recognizing the critical need to keep our children and all pedestrians safe when walking on our sidewalks and along our roadways,” said County Executive Steve Bellone.
“Suffolk County has implemented several successful driver awareness programs that have reduced the number of serious vehicular accidents in the County.
The Suffolk County School Zone Traffic Safety Commission will become another avenue that we anticipate will play another vital role in improving the safety and well-being of our residents.” The commission will be made up of nine members, including the Chairperson of the Education and Information Technology Committee, the Chairperson of the Public Safety Committee, the Presiding Officer of the County Legislature, the County Executive, a representative of the Suffolk County Police Department, the Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, the President of the Suffolk County Superintendents Association, a representative of the Suffolk County Regional Parent Teacher Association, and the Executive Director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association.
