The fast-improving Jesper Fast netted his ninth of the season and Keith Yandle tacked on his fifth as the Rangers forged a 2-0 first period lead.
The surging Caps knotted it in the second with goals from Jay Beagle and T.J. Oshie , the latter his 19th of the campaign.
The Caps still have a huge lead in the Eastern Conference with a 47-13-4 record while the Rangers improved to 38-21-6.
